MCMC IN FIFE

In 2006 Fife Council responded to the national government initiative to prevent and reduce the number of young people who were not in education, employment or training (NEET). In order to do so it formed a planning group involving key partners – Fife Council, SDS, Fife Colleges and the Third Sector. In 2007 this was formalised as a strategic group under More Choices More Chances (MCMC) and overall plan developed. In 2008 16+ Learning Choices was introduced to ensure young people leaving school had an offer of a learning opportunity and as part of this Activity Agreements were developed.

Broadly speaking the focus of More Choices More Chances (MCMC) delivery is on following:

Identification

Developing a process which effectively identifies those young people who may require support in their transition from compulsory education.

Prevention

Developing partner strategies, both in school and post school, to prevent those identified as having need from becoming disengaged at the end of compulsory school education.

Intervention

Developing appropriate ways of intervening with identified young people to prevent them becoming NEET e.g. based on programmes like Icebreaker, Activate, Work4U and Activity Agreements.

Provision

Ensuring that there is an appropriate provision of post 16 learning opportunities in Fife based on school, HE, FE, Training and Personal Skills Development.

Sustainability

Developing strategies to sustain young people in positive learning opportunities.

In relation to the above the two main operational targets for MCMC are as follows

  • To increase the number of young people in positive and sustained destinations post 16 i.e. at school, Higher Education, Further Education, Training and Employment.
  • To reduce the number of young people (aged 16-19) not in education, employment and training (NEET).

The MCMC documents attached to this website provide a more detailed picture of the work undertaken by all the partners to develop a process in Fife which will deliver the above. These related to operational plans, briefing notes and other process information.
