What is a Foundation Apprenticeship?
As a school pupil, a Foundation Apprenticeship gives you early exposure to the world of work, helping you to develop the skills, experience, and knowledge you’ll need when you leave school.
For you, it’s the chance to get a head start on your career by gaining an industry-recognised qualification, work on real projects and broaden your career options.
Fife College and Fife Council are working in partnership to ensure that Fife Secondary school pupils benefit from a fantastic, full range of Foundation Apprenticeships.

Foundation Apprenticeships are now recognised by all Colleges and Universities and you can use them, along with other SQA National 5/Higher qualifications, to gain access to a Modern Apprenticeship or Higher Education including degree pathways. You may also be able to access some Higher National Certificate (HNC) study routes at Fife College with your FA qualification and no SQA Higher qualifications.
There are 10 frameworks on offer in Fife:
- Business Skills 1 Year programme
- Engineering 2 year programme
- Civil Engineering 2 year programme
- Social Services Children & Young People 2 year programme or 1 year
- Social Services Health Care 2 year programme or 1 year
- Accountancy 2 year programme
- Scientific Technologies 1 year programme
- Creative & Digital Media 2 year programme
- Software Development 2 Year Programme
- Food & Drink Technologies 14 month programme
This is typically a 2 year course aimed at S5 and S6 pupils typically but some frameworks are suitable for S4. Some of our frameworks can be done in 1 year. The 1 year options require additional study time for placements. This could be a full day on top of their two afternoons per week. If pupils pick this option, it is important to recognise this additional requirement before applying. This Course is offered to school pupils only at no cost.
At the end of your apprenticeship, you’ll have not only gained a qualification SCQF Level 6, but valuable workplace skills and experience.
Information also for parents of pupils who are thinking of joining the Foundation Apprenticeship programme can be found here!
